JURONG SHIPYARD SECURES ORDERS TO BUILD WEST TUCANA AND WEST CASTOR
4/6/11
JSPL Hull 11-1101/1102 will be powered by
Cat® C175 gensets

Jurong Shipyard Pte Ltd (JSPL), a subsidiary
of Sembcorp Marine, recently secured orders for two turnkey jack-up rigs
from Seadrill. Scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2012 and
the first quarter of 2013 respectively, the projects represent the latest
generation, high specification jack-up drilling rigs with greater capacities
and capabilities than current conventional units. These rigs will be built
based on the Friede & Goldman JU2000E design and are suitable for operations
worldwide, including the southern North Sea. On completion, these new rigs
will be capable of operating in waters of 400 feet and drill to depths
of 30,000 feet. They will offer improved drilling efficiencies with off-line
pipe handling, simultaneous operations support and are equipped with increased
accommodation capacity.
To convince JSPL that the Cat C175 offshore
generator set is the ideal selection for the new high specification jack-up,
the team at Tractors Singapore Limited’s Power Systems Division and Caterpillar®
conducted a series of technical discussions with the JSPL engineers. The
C175 generator was deemed the best fit due to the small footprint and high
power density. One unit of C175 generator delivers 1830eKW and weigh around
25 tons which is significantly lower and smaller than comparable medium-speed
engines in the market. Its compact package design makes a huge impact on
the rig’s performance.
TSL was eventually awarded the contract in
February 2011 to supply 10 units of Cat C175 offshore generators as main
power supply for the two rigs. With this success, it symbolizes Cat’s
continual status as an offshore industry leader and again reflects Jurong
Shipyard’s strong confidence that Tractors Singapore will deliver and
support a quality product.
